Give us this day our daily bread

Marie-Pierre Moine visits Yasar Halim Bakery and discovers a shop with a real heart

Whether or not they happen to be of Turkish origin, there are very many people for whom a day without fresh bread is a very miserable day indeed. To put it crudely, those of us who like good bread need our daily fix. The search for this invariably involves a daily trip to the local baker. The people of Harringay in North East London are luckier than most. They are within reach of Yasar Halim, a bakery rated not just as one of the best in town but as one of the best 100 shops in the world. In the middle of busy Green Lanes, between Manor House and Turnpike Lane underground stations, there literally is a treat in store for lovers of freshly baked bread. And probably more than one treat if they let themselves be tempted.

When you walk into the Yasar Halim bakery you walk into a bustling noisy place with a quite unique atmosphere. It’s not one you get in impersonal supermarkets and multiple high street shops. It’s the happy atmosphere of a well established local store where people like to shop and where the staff and the regular customers have been on friendly terms for longer than anyone can remember.
