Welcome to issue 6 of tasteAnatolia. A beautiful bunch of ripe grapes is on our cover for a very good reason. Turkey has been home to wine-making for 5,000 years but Turkish wines are still barely known in Britain. Since we are a magazine dedicated to promoting a greater understanding of Turkey and its cuisine as a holiday or business destination, we see it as our job to try and redress the balance. As the magazine goes to press, we are getting ready for a wine tasting event to celebrate our first birthday. Nine leading Turkish wine producers will introduce their top wines to the British wine trade and press in Hüseyin Özer’s Sofra restaurant in Covent Garden on October 15. The event is supported by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and the Turkish Culture & Tourism Office in London. It will be attended by His Excellency Yiğit Alpogan, the Turkish Ambassador to London. The focus of the hour-long tasting will be on native Turkish grape varieties. Each producer will present two wines.
You’ll have to wait for our next issue to find a report of what will be a very exciting and special event. Meanwhile, you can read Andrew Catchpole’s feature on page 32.
Fans of golf will be able to tee off on page 58 with Peter Ellegard who discusses the excellent courses in Belek, the new holiday destination for golfers everywhere. And on the subject of popular resorts, Tony Perrottet takes us back 2,000 years for an entertaining tour of the Roman Empire’s favourite holiday spot – Ephesus. On a more serious note, Richard Stevens marks the 800th anniversary of the birth of Rumi, the founder of the Mevlevi dervishes, with a review of some of his works and some of the best books about him.
Food lovers can find out about street food, köfte and Turkish cooking equipment. Meanwhile TV chef Ross Burden leaves the kitchen spotlights to reminisce about a wonderful drive through Anatolia.
Last but not least, you will have noticed that tasteAnatolia now carries a £4.00 cover price. This reflects the quality of the magazine. However, the good news is that if you are an existing subscriber and you introduce a new subscriber, you will go on receiving entirely free copies for another year, as will the person you have introduced. The same applies to any new subscriber who introduces another person. So the message is bring on new friends to tasteAnatolia, wherever in the world they may be. And of course enjoy your magazine.
