Editor's Letter

Welcome to the mid winter issue of tasteAnatolia, bridging the gap between the end of one year and the start of the next one.

This is the season for making lists – of presents, of greeting cards, of good resolutions for the months to come. Sharon Croxford suggests a list of 12 seasonal gifts. They are all very lovely and tempting but if I had my wish and a expense-is-no-limit treat to choose for myself, I’d go on one of the lavish Turkish spa breaks described by Suzanne Swan. An expert on spas, Turkish cheeses and other subjects to do with Turkey where she now lives, Suzanne is a new addition to our talented team of contributors.

Still on the subject of numbers, Turkish property specialist Robin Hollingbury rounds off his article on buying abroad with seriously useful tips for would-be investors.

We have had a busy year at tasteAnatolia, the latest challenge being a major wine tasting to celebrate our first birthday. Nine leading Turkish wine producers introduced their best wines in Hüseyin Özer’s Sofra restaurant in Covent Garden on October 15. The event was supported by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and the Turkish Tourist Office in London. Andrew Catchpole tells all about it. The tasting was followed by a glittering party attended by His Excellency Yigit Alpogan, the Turkish Ambassador to London. I am happy to report that it was a happy, noisy occasion with plenty of delicious mezze, good wine and conversation.

Take time to enjoy this issue of tasteAnatolia, read Andrew Finkel’s musings about the coffee-house culture, travel to North Cyprus and get your tastebuds tingling with Emel Yüksel’s recipes for dried fruit and Pat Yale’s evocation of Istanbul pastry shops.

tasteAnatolia wishes you all a very happy New Year. We thank you for your support and hope you’ll make Turkey a holiday destination in 2008. I am already looking forward to a sailing holiday off its Mediterranean coast next June.
