tasteAnatolia's Emel Yüksel loves food and cooking so much she longed to have somewhere to grow her own Turkish produce. Here she describes her first forays into a London plot
I always liked the idea of allotment. You grow plants, you care about them, you look after them, you can cook with really fresh ingredients, you become self sufficient and you can enjoy the open air with friends.
Almost four years ago I was on the waiting list of Hackney Allotment Society. Then last year, after a long, long wait, I was invited by the rep of Springfield, Jessica Datta, to choose one of six new plots.
The plot I had chosen was full of pieces of glass, metal, rocks and even tree trunks. It was early May. And it took us almost two months to clean the soil, to find the timbers from skips for borders and to reclaim bricks for the path. I tried to be loyal to the idea of allotments; you have to reclaim the necessary things like timber from where you can. I tried not to spend any money except on the seeds.
