Fly to your second home

For the best returns in property investment in Turkey, says Robin Hollingbury, follow the budget airlines

Press reports reveal that more than 800 people a day are leaving Britain for pastures greener. The reasons may be many: better standards of living, more opportunities for children, greater personal safety, kinder weather and so on. So where are all these people heading? The first choice for many used to be coastal Spain, or perhaps rural France where buying an old property to renovate was, for some time, a favourite endeavour, while family members already established in Australia and New Zealand made emigration an option. More recently, relocation dreams have been inspired by countries in Eastern Europe where property prices have been remarkably low.

Increasingly, however, attention is being focused on Turkey where EU accession talks have helped to raise the country's profile. As it comes into focus in the West, Turkey is being seen for what it is: an amazingly vast, progressive and rapidly developing nation more than able to hold her own on the international stage of tourism, culture, cuisine, leisure, trade and democracy.

Turkey's Aegean and Mediterranean coasts have all the ingredients that make a popular holiday destination: sun, sea, breathtaking scenery, hospitable and friendly people and, importantly, value for money. The Turkish government has been investing both from the public coffers and through private partnerships in the country's infrastructure in a bid to more than double the numbers of annual visitors to over 30 million. Considerable attention is being given to the provision of golf courses in many coastal resorts as well as marina projects. The road infrastructure, already of a high standard, is constantly being improved and new roads are high on the agenda.
